UDL Guideline 7.1 Optimize individual choice and autonomy
Duolingo is a perfect app to optimize individual choice and autonomy because it offers opportunities in autonomy to ensure individual engagement. Duolingo allows users to learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and English through games, practice, and memorization. This app meets this guideline because Duolingo provides learners with as much autonomy as possible. Users can test out of lessons based on prior knowledge or increase the perceived challenge to expand their knowledge base.

General Critique:
This app allows students and instructors to be active in the curriculum planning process. Foreign Language instructors could use Duolingo as a supplement or in support of academic concepts taught throughout their curriculum. Students can work ahead of classroom curriculum or use Duolingo as an additional opportunity to address classroom curriculum demands.
